“I’ve seen the way you look at me, when you think I don’t notice.”
Sokka jumped, attention ripping from the dull papers that littered the library’s low table. He recognized the tone, the voice that caused the delicate hairs on the back of his neck and arms to stand on end, the one that took away his appetite when he heard it cut through the low chatter of the palace dining hall.
“What do you mean?”
Azula’s eyes were hard as she entered the library, and Sokka swallowed heavily, suddenly aware of how very alone they were. He wondered how long she’d lingered outside the heavy, embellished doors.
Azula stopped just shy of kicking distance, and Sokka grimaced. Damn. “You heard me. I want you to stop it. Stop looking at me like that.”
Her voice held the same commanding air that Zuko’s sometimes took, too. The tone of someone who had been trained to rule, raised in power. Although Zuko’s was different. Zuko’s didn’t make Sokka’s stomach twist nauseatingly and heart quake, ready to run at a moment’s notice.
“You mean how I watch you when you’re training? That’s not- I’m just trying to make sure the palace and I don’t get flambéed.” He tried to grin at her, but it fell flat. He hadn’t been able to smile at her yet. Not even a false one.
Azula’s flinch was almost imperceptible, but Sokka caught it with a flush of pride. “No, not how you watch me as I train.”
“Well, you’re going to have to be a little more specific then,” Sokka retorted, his adrenaline finally catching up to his body, frustrated at the shaking of his hands. But with the things he’d seen her do, with how wild and unpredictable her bending was now- well, Sokka was far more defenseless than Zuko, the sole champion of Azula’s cause. It was only natural Sokka’s more animalistic instincts would take over. “I can’t control my eyes, Azula. They do things, sometimes. Because they function.”
There was a beat where he realized, and perhaps she did too, that he’d just spoken her name for the first time. Azula sucked in a breath, eyes darting back towards the door. Sokka shifted in his spot kneeling beside the low table, relieved to no longer be under the weight of their amber gaze.
“If you’ve got no control over the actions of your body, Peasant,” she spat, “then you’d best not look at me at all. For your sake.”
“Fine.”
She left like she arrived, quickly and silently. Sokka’s eyes followed the swinging curtain of her hair on the way out.
Is this the most amazing thing ever or what?? I want more Azula please!!!!
Also, this phrase.
“If you’ve got no control over the actions of your body, Peasant,” she spat, “then you’d best not look at me at all. For your sake.”
