Countdown: 7 days to Gladiator’s Anniversary
From the moment I was plotting this arc, it began to take shape around that specific song by Leaves’ Eyes. Gosh, I don’t know what is it about it that it ALWAYS makes me think about this arc. It never fails.
Anyways, this one’s the artwork that caused my 911 post the other day, if you were wondering :’D I seriously felt awful after finishing Xin Long xD and it’s only his head! But yep, my hand told me to stop it so I had to stop…
Admittedly, this is one of my favorites of the whole batch. I didn’t really think I’d ever draw the Rough Rhinos, and I certainly didn’t draw all of them, but heck, I guess they don’t look that bad xD and there’s Rui Shi too, I took off his helmet so you’d all know who it was! But yeah, he’d normally keep that helmet on, we all know that…
Azula’s fire offering for Xin Long still makes me giddy even after all this time. Truthfully I’m very astounded that I could draw not only another version of it, but to draw it from such an angle? Boggles the mind! But heck, it worked, so I’ll happily take it as a good thing xD Sokka’s panicked expression is enhanced by the marks of sleeplessness, I tried to draw both him and Azula slightly unkempt as to show the toll the forest was taking on them. But granted, Azula still had to look graceful or else… (?)

Sokka and Azula heroic night. I should do art for it! This scene was too emotional and the entire intense situation deepned their bond.
(I added some dirt on their clothes due to the battles they fought)
PS: Sorry this is not well-drawn, I used my finger to draw on my phone instead of my favorite pencil on my sketch. It wasn’t as good as I wanted but a little better than I expected.

Countdown: 8 days to Gladiator’s Fifth Anniversary
When it comes to Gladiator’s very controversial second story arc, the Kyoshi’s Heir/Savage Hook arc, there’s one song that will always suit it perfectly. Many of you may already know it, I even made an AMV with it! But alas, the AMV died because Viacom kills all the things we love…
Not much needs to be said about the artwork above, other than that this time we do have a juxtaposition of several scenes of the story. It’s the first time I’m relatively satisfied with my rendition for their first kiss, and it’s certainly the first time I’ve drawn the heart-wrenching, earth-shattering argument between Sokka and Azula at the Palace. While I’m pleased with it… damn, I don’t really want to do that to myself again xD
No, I don’t know how to draw blood stains, but I tried anyways. The fight between Jet and Sokka is still one of the most intense showdowns in the story, and I’m rather proud of how it came out. I tried to recreate it, I made efforts to show a few wounds on both fighters but Sokka’s legs were out of sight… which meant I couldn’t show some of Sokka’s worst injuries. But I kind of hope that one suffices? :’D

Countdown: 9 days to Gladiator’s Fifth Anniversary
Of all the things I’d always wanted to do but never felt confident enough to pull off, I finally decided to take the plunge with this one.
Finally, the insanely long project is revealed now! And the project was, in fact, an attempt at designing poster-like artworks for Gladiator’s main arcs. Not everything is directly based on scenes in the story, but most of them will be!
This artwork in particular is more of a basic concept for the 22 chapters that comprise the very first story arc, which goes by the very creative name of Introductory Arc. I’d hope the composition speaks for itself, but if not, the main idea was to show the way their relationship worked at those early stages. When faced with a thousand foes, they teamed up to fight them but while keeping an eye on each other because they couldn’t quite trust one another at the time. The people behind them are all either featured or referenced throughout the arc: Zuko and Toph may be the only ones you can see properly, but the full list of characters back there included Piandao, Xin Fu, Smellerbee and even the Dart Slayer.
The song I linked above is the one I associate with this arc the most. It embodies something essential to Sokka and Azula’s relationship in Gladiator, namely the idea that they started to truly live their lives once they met each other and, in time, joined forces. I’ve always loved that song, and I’ve always thought it’s a great fit, especially for how Sokka feels throughout the Introductory Arc.
So, alrighty… day one down, nine more to go!
